Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins

Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins

Life Background

This was a truly inspirational book that blew my mind. Goggins comes from a harsh background, and he admits his vulnerability when he describes he used to wet the bed. I was amazed by this level of vulnerability because it sheds light on how emotionally strong he is in addition to his physical strength. You see such an incredible transformation - from cleaning up roaches to where he is now.

The Theme of Persistence

No matter what obstacles came Goggins’ way, he never gave up. He had to redo his early bootcamp several times — one of the hardest bootcamps in the nation. He talks about taking the path of MOST resistance. He talks about complacency and what happens when you don’t harden your mind. If you keep pushing, you will eventually hit a point where your limits are renewed. You can do more. You can be more. Because, you can be anything you want to be if you DON’T listen to yourself. Don’t listen to yourself. Know what you goal is and aim for that. Don’t lie to yourself because your mind will find every reason to quit.

Building a Callous Mind

What I realized is that pain and suffering is all relative. Your perception of pain and suffering changes as your mind continues to become more and more callous. Suddenly, the things that were so hard to do feel like nothing. You can achieve more by hardening yourself. I notice with myself that the more I give up, the easier it is for me to give up on other aspects of my life. It' becomes easier to make excuses. Building a callous mind controls the way you think and operate. Do you continue past pain or do you turn back around once you feel pain?
